Courtney Smith Headshot

Courtney Smith

Head of People

Courtney has spent over 14 years building workplaces where people genuinely want to show up and she's thrilled to bring that experience to an organization built around getting people outside. Courtney got her start working in the outdoor industry, and that experience shaped how she thinks about people, culture, and community ever since. It's a big part of what drew her to NOLS.

Most recently, Courtney served as Director of Human Resources at Asheville School, and before that led people and culture teams at companies ranging from a bicycle component manufacturer to a synthesizer company. Along the way, she's gotten hands-on with everything from compensation and benefits to leadership development and organizational change, always maintaining a focus on building something that actually fits the people and the place, rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Courtney holds a Master's in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and a Bachelor's in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University.
When she's not at work, you'll find Courtney cooking, cycling, or out enjoying the outdoors with her family.
